How to Get into Harvard Business School

How to Get into Harvard Business School?

Every year, some 8,000 young Frenchmen go to study at an American university. About 200 of them are enrolled in one of the two most prestigious institutions in the world: Harvard and MIT. How to integrate them? How does the training take place? Five young people tell their course and experience on the spot.

A good level in English is, of course, the sine qua non to be accepted at Harvard or MIT.

At the undergraduate level (bachelor), the recruitment of foreign students is insufficient at Harvard or MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Each year, the two prestigious universities accept less than 150 non-resident American students.

To apply, you have to pass tests run by private organizations. It is either the SAT or the act. These pay tests (from 50 to 80 US $, from 38 to €61, for the SAT, and from 80 to 100 US $, from 61 to €76, for the Act, relate to math and science (physics, Chemistry or biology), most often in the form of MCQ (multiple-choice questionnaires). A dissertation (essay) allows you to test your thinking and writing skills. In English, of course! Sessions are held 6 times a year in a dozen cities in France.

You also need to demonstrate your level in English by passing recognized tests. The most common are the TOEFL (test of English as a foreign language) and the IELTS (English Language Testing system). These tests and their preparation are paid (about 200 US $ – €153 – for both TOEFL and IELTS). The scores required to claim at Harvard or MIT are 100 (out of 120) for the TOEFL and 7.5 (out of 9) for IELTS.

At the graduate level (master, Ph.D.), the prospects for admission to Harvard and MIT are better than for the Bachelor. At Harvard, each faculty (Harvard Business School, Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Medical School ...) organizes its recruitment.

Likewise, at MIT, each department has its own criteria. But the procedure is often the same: in addition to a master Level 1, for an individual request or as part of a partnership with your school in France, your file must include all your notes from the BAC, a letter of motivation and three letters of recommendation from researchers or teachers. Be aware that if you do not get out of the top 10 of the major engineering or business schools or the ENS (higher Normal School), it is better to try your luck at another American university.

Note also that candidates for a graduate degree in economics-management, including an MBA (Master of Business Administration), must pass a particular test: the GMAT.
Finally, as with The Bachelor, you must also demonstrate your level in English by passing the TOEFL or IELTS. With the same score in support: 100 (out of 120) for the TOEFL and 7.5 (out of 9) for IELTS.
